Djoudj National Bird Park
Djoudj National Bird Park is situated 60km east of St. Louis, Senegal. It was created April 14th, 1971 and covers a surface of 16000ha. It is one of the most important wetland sites with 365 species of migratory and sedentary birds. It became a RAMSAR site in 1977 and a World Heritage site in 1981.
The park is surrounded by 7 villages (Deby, Tiguet, Diadiam I, II, III, Fourarate, and Rone) composed of 3 different ethnic groups: the Maures, the Wolofs, and the Pulars. The villages are organized into an Inter-Village Comity with the goal of developing a common vision for the protection of the park and the development of the villages. There are several interesting tourist activities including: a motorized canoe trip to the pelican nesting island; a visit with an experienced guide to the Grand Lake and Gainthe; a visit to the artisans shop, “Boutik-bi”; and cultural performances and guided visits in the surrounding villages. Food and lodging can be found at the “Le Njagabaar” a lodge located in the village of Diadiam III about 800m from the park entrance.
