The West Africa Peace Corps Volunteer Conference: Sharing Best Practices from the Field, hosted by Peace Corps/Senegal, is an opportunity for Peace Corps Volunteers from around West Africa to share innovative ideas and lessons learned in grassroots development.

The conference, organized and led primarily by Peace Corps Volunteers themselves, will address a variety of topics and incorporate demonstrations which include the following:

  1. Applied Technologies:
    Nut Sheller, Oil Press, Briquette Press, “Bed-Legs” for hanging mosquito nets outdoors, Rope-Pulleys, Bio-Gas Generator, Bicycle Milling Machine, Solar Fruit Dryer, Beehive, Biosand Filter, Rocket Stove (improved stove)
  2. Agro-forestry Basics:
    Seed Collection, Tree Nurseries, Tree Protectors, Live Fencing, Intensive Moringa Production, etc.
  3. Drip Irrigation and Urban Gardening: (Field Trip to Fann Hospital Garden)
    Ultra low gravity drip irrigation systems, Container & bed gardening, Fertilization, Starting seeds & Transplanting, Integrated Pest management
  4. Project Design/Grant Writing Seminar:
    Project Design (Conception, Action Planning, Budgeting, Monitoring and Evaluation), Financing Options, Round-table Discussion

8:30 a.m. - Arrival and Welcoming Remarks
10:00 a.m. - Sessions Begin: 2 half-hour sessions or 1 hour-long session (including 5 min breaks)
11:10 a.m. - Coffee Break
11:30 a.m. - Sessions Continue: 4 half-hour sessions or 2 hour-long sessions
2:00 p.m. - Lunch
2:45 p.m. - Sessions Continue: 4 half-hour sessions or 2 hour-long sessions
5:15 p.m. - End of day

Friday, February 12

9:00 a.m. - Breakfast at Peace Corps Office
9:30 a.m. - Applied Technologies demonstrations in rotating groups
11:00 a.m. - Choice of 1) Agro-forestry Basics, 2) Drip Irrigation and Urban Gardening, 3) Project Design/Grant Writing Seminar, 4) SeneGAD (Senegal Gender and Development) Meeting - P.C. Senegal only
*Boxed lunches provided for all
4:00 p.m. (or earlier) - End of day
